We forget sometimes. But you know what else? "Truth is beautiful, without doubt; but so are lies." Ralph Waldo Emerson. Here, we will play with all of the above. Oh yeah.

Jennifer Lopez Performs LIVE on American Idol Result Show
Oh migawd. She is so cheezy. And she cannot sing. Yea, the perfect mentor for this show.
Ho ho, my sides!
Could Saddam still be with us?
From the Daily News today:
Saddam Hussein is "alive and well" - or so says an agent selling what he purports is "forensic evidence" that the Iraqi dictator's execution was faked. Phoenix-based David Hans Schmidt tells us he's been hired by an unnamed "foreign head of state," whose intelligence service believes Saddam "is living in a foreign country under an assumed name."
Who the hell knows? I could see it happening. What is truth anyway? Can we reliably rely on our governments and the media to tell us this truth. Oh, and as an aside, I didn't even know that Nimrod was an actual name. That's it, you know someone's gonna name their kid "dorkface."

Where do I get one?
"Hey hey kids! It’s time for another useless gadget to add to your web page. This one will spit out a randomly selected quote from our favourite president, George W.!
"Look, this is a man. He's got great numbers. He talks about numbers. I'm beginning to think not only did he invent the Internet, but he invented the calculator."
To use, all your need to do is copy this code into your blog! Stick your favourite photo of the man himself above for extra effect."
Post Easter Blues
My students were not their usual bouncy, upbeat happy selves and maybe it rubbed off on me. I dunno. Maybe I am still really disappointed with the Season Finale of Prison Break. What the hell was that, anyway?
Hey, look! I am not the only one who doesn't hate him. Maybe I started a trend?
Thanks to www.perezhilton.com for the picture.

Oh Bitch Please
Stop whining. The Daily News reports today that: "Kevin Costner's company Kevin's Music LLC (KML) is suing media company Mahee Worldwide Ventures Inc. and its president, Richard V. Mahee, for close to $4 million in damages, contending the firm did not fulfill a promise to promote "Mr. Costner's music activities." Costner fronts an unnamed six-member pop/ rock band and had entrusted Mahee to market the group, reads the suit, filed Tuesday, in the same way it claimed to have "successfully promoted other celebrities - such as Lindsay Lohan." KML accuses the defendants of wanting to "use Mr. Costner's good name in connection with [their] pitch of their business to others."
Can you imagine what kind of genius pathetic old-fart rock this guy's band must play? Ew, I'm getting fever shivers just thinking about it. Is this his mid life crisis, trying to be a rock god? I've always thought he was creepy and was never a fan of his middle-of-the-road acting. I know that he appeals to that middle-aged single/lonely lady demographic, but I think he's kinda gross, especially since he's been outed as a big PERV. A few years ago, I was on a second or third date with some ex-boyfriend and we decided to rent a movie. I saw him eyeing "Waterworld" and I said "I really don't care what we rent as long as there's no Kevin Costner." He turned to look at me and said oh so casually with a graceful shrug of his shoulders. "Oh, he's hideous." He said it so naturally that I cracked up laughing and the whole store turned to look at me because I have a loud cackle. But I didn't care 'cause it was so funny. Anyway, Kevin Costner is part of the same problem: the dumbing down of us.

Haunted Slumber Party
Well we made it out alive. I did not see any ghosts. Did any of my students? I hope so and am waiting to hear some of their great stories. I don't know what happened to me this semester ... I conked out at the relatively early hour of 2 am ish. Last semester I lasted til 4 am.
Above centre and right is the morning after. Ha ha, look at poor Bithusan sitting down int he middle. A little too much concentrated silver bullets, eh? And Brenton on the end seriously had a sore throat. Poor guy.
I conked out as I said, so I even missed the cemetary walk. Bummer. Last semester, we went to the cemetaries at about 1 am-ish. I really wasn't expecting much, but the weird thing was all these candles were lit. It was unexpected and way creepy. As well, there was a newly dug grave that had an upside down cross stuck in the dirt. As my dog would say, "What a hell?" That freaked a substantial amount of us out. And a few people claimed they saw some weird stuff. Ash, I am STILL waiting for pic/video you shot. It really was an experience.
On the far left is Adrian, that handsome Romanian devil who was kind enough to give me a ride to the party and home. Thanks, Adrian. The second picture is taken at the infamous haunted stairwell of the fifth floor. This is supposedly where the nun jumped to her death.
Ash and Rasa, they are both EVIL. As is Jon L. More stories to come as people update me on their experiences. Oh, and we must talk about the Ouija board. Wooooooo ....

Haunted Slumber Party
Vanier College, where I happily teach English Literature to wonderful (well except for Sebastian and that Portuguese kid) students is supposedly haunted. The stories differ but some say it is a male ghost that prowls the halls and others claim it is a nun. Vanier used to be a nunnery way way back and then a private convent school and I even heard various buildings were used as morgues. I teach a Gothic literature course called Ravens and Shadow. Tonight is our second Haunted Slumber Party. Myself, another teacher named Nancy L who teaches anthropology, and about 50 teenages and young adults will be sleeping over on the 5th floor where the nun supposedly roams. Did mention we are surrounded by 3 cemetaries? We're also going for a midnight cemetary walk. I really hope I see a ghost.
Wish me luck! Hope I am here tomorrow to blog about it. BWA HA HA.

Sanjaya Malakar- Ain't no mountain high enough
Sometimes, these "judges" can be real sanctimonius and self righteous assholes.
Part II
Some of the comments on YouTube ranged from "He looks like a monkey" to "he's such a joke." Let's ask ourselves however, shall we, what exactly was so riotous about William Hung? Was it his accent, his small stature, his slighly Down's Syndrom-ish face? Does he not seem like every caricature of an Asian presented in pop culture? And the fact that he had no idea he was every frat boy and popular girl's target of ridicule made him even more pathetic.
I am left wondering why there is such a backlash against this 17-year old kid named Sanjaya. Much like Chris Rock said there was no way corporate America would have an Apprentice named 'Kwame" I am beginning to believe the ugly idea that this overly critical -- let's call it what it is, a massacre of this kid -- is really about one thing. And it's not his talent. Or lack thereof. If corporation American Idol and the corporate pop music business was in fact about talent, then someone explain to me the mysterious popularity of Jello Jennifer Lopez. Ashlee Simpson. Hell, Mick Jagger can't sing either and he's Mick Jagger. I think he's got a bit of a Michael Jackson quality (good Michael, not bad Michael.)

What's everyone complainin' 'bout?
I don't get the fuss around this Sanjaya Malakar guy from American Idol. Warning: I have a feeling this is going to be a long rant post. Let me state for the record that I do not like American Idol, or Canadian Idol or any idol. I do not watch these shows. I think they contribute to the general dumbing down of our society and to the acceptance of the mediocre. Who can appreciate art after being subjected to hour after hour of Simon being a dick to some deluded, finger-snapping cartoonish man or woman thinking that their horrible voice is a gift from God and thus it is their responsibility to share it with the world? And btw, what the hell is Paula flippin Abdul doing being a judge? She can't sing! Maybe she could dance a little back in the day, but now, she can barely even speak. What's wrong with her jaw anyway? How come she has such difficulty moving it and enunciating? Or is she drunk all the time as has been claimed? I really don't care if she does like the drink ... I just wonder how such a mediocre "talent" became a judge? And how is it that Simon doesn't turn around to her and snap, "You can's sing! Stop telling people they are pitchy!"
But really, isn't the landscape of television filled with such classics as "My Wife and Kids" and "Trouble with Jim"? Forgive me if I get the names wrong ... I would really rather prefer to call them "Pieces of Crap" because aren't they just that? Vapid little nuggets of banality interspersed with commercials urging us to consume more? All this anesthetises us to what is really going on out there. I understand all too well. The world is depressing ... with the polar bears quickly heading towards exctinction and the environment getting to the point of no return and people wearing fur and the starving children. It's all going to hell and no one cares, it seems. Everyone comes home from jobs they hate, sits their ass down in front of the TV and watches and watches while sucking on a beer or a joint. I get it. It's the path of least resistance. It's not that I hate TV. I LOVE TV. I love Dexter (yum), I think The Sopranos is operatic, and Prison Break (Season 1) was quite good for regular TV. These shows are not dumbed down for a consumer audience; they rightly assume that the audience has the intellectual acumen to understand.
But for people to get all up and offended because someone supposedly can't sing is too funny! Och, the irony. My sides, my sides! Gwen Stephani gets all anyways because Sanjaya might do one of her songs? Who does she think she is? Maria Callas?! Bitch please, you can barely sing yourself. You have molded yourself into a consumer product for mass consumption by the mass audience, so do NOT go getting all "he ain't good enough for my songs" on us. And besides, the guy can sing. He's a great entertainer. He would be a fine Idol. He is exactly what the show is about, bland, forgettable and slighly cheesy entertainment. This is the show, folks. Don't tell me Clay Gaiken was an artist, some sort of Caruso.
Remember William Hung from a few seasons ago? Talk about mean-spirited. But I suppose this is what passes for humour in our culture. We're all just way too cool for school, eh?
This poor guy sincerely auditioned for Idol, performing "She Bangs." Of course, it was a bomb, but somehow this guy gathered a freaky cult following. He himself was not in on the joke. Yeah, I know, a lot of people said he was laughing all the way to the bank, but that is not the point. What was everyone laughing at? Let's watch of video of him and then I post part II.
